I have been getting some grass seed to grow in my lawn this year already. I have found that Midwest lawns need to have fresh seeds infused every year to keep the lawn very healthy.
The way to grow seed is three fold.
water a whole lot – this one is where most homeowners fall down and fail. they water good for a couple days but then they stop. what happens then is that the seeds only barely begin to germinate and then stop and dont grow. this is a problem fo sho! you gotta water more than you think and water for days and days up to 3 weeks or more
second you need to have warm temps – if the weather is not conducive to good growth, the seed will either germinate and die from freezing or from heat stress. New grass seedlings are susceptible to bad temps.
THe last piece is that there needs to adequate soil for the grass to root down into. it must have soil to grab into so it can survive for the long haul.
